Making Community Spaces

Makerspace education is a strong vehicle for building community connections. We look forward to commencing these activities as we re-open for non-essential services in 2022.

Children: Our afterschool program is a makerspace for children ages 7 to 12 in STEAM enrichment--activities that foster love for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math as part of our afterschool programming. During the school year, activities are conducted in a 1,000 square foot makerspace with four 3D printers.

Youth: Maverick Makers PRO is a workforce and youth maker program for teens. Teens become versed in the product design, assembly, and business development while also working as leaders in the makerspace. Our first product, the What Kind of Maker Are You key chains and necklaces were made and sold at our Maverick Community Connector event in 2018. In 2020 teens helped to bridge the STEM divide with STEM Books made in-house and distributed to children who were shuttered in.

Adults: Our repertoire of workshops, facilitated groups and events also include community building opportunities for adults such as sewing, knitting, and jewelry making.

Our family service coordinator is available to meet with people to determine how to best help them and their families. We start with an initial meeting that helps us to build a strong relationship, strengthen family supports, and link families to services onsite at MLCS or with one of our community partners. We offer economic counseling and employment based services onsite as well as referrals to our children’s afterschool makerspace or to one of our youth development and workforce tracks for families with children. We also refer to one of our community partners when families can be better served through another program.
